Mohammed Hussein Al Amoudi will make US$15 million available to the organisers of the Sixteenth International Conference on AIDS and STI (Sexually Transmitted Infections) in Africa (ICASA 2011) to be held from December 4th through to December 8th, 2011.

The funds donated will be used to help prepare the Millennium Hall in Addis Ababa and provide the full infrastructure for the conference, including all the necessary materials, an exhibition centre, a delegate village, a media centre and 17 halls enabling 14 sessions and workshops to be held simultaneously.

The amount attributable to ICASA 2011, added to $6m provided to the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) between 2007 and 2010, has provided a total AIDS awareness and treatment philanthropic contribution of over $20m.

President Gilma Woldegiorgis of Ethiopia presented an award on January 6th to Mohammed Hussein Al Amoudi in recognition of his support for ICASA 2011 (16th International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa), held in Addis Ababa in December. ICASA 2011 was an event of global importance for sub-Saharan Africa where an estimated 68% of all people with HIV live in a region with only 12% of the global population (2010 figures).

Mr Al Amoudi provided $15 million for the full infrastructure for the conference, including all the necessary materials and expertise to upgrade the Millennium Hall, an exhibition centre, a delegate village, a media centre and 17 halls enabling 14 sessions and workshops to be held simultaneously. In addition to the $15 million contributed to ICASA 2011, Mr Al Amoudi has pledged, separately, additional sums to fighting AIDS in Africa through the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), bringing the total commitment between ICASA 2011 and CHAI to over $20m.

Mohammed Hussein Al Amoudi has always been committed to supporting both sport, especially his first love which is football, and healthcare where he has made major contributions to such projects as AIDS awareness and women’s health as well as to promoting academic research.

The link between the two was made explicit when Mohammed Al Amoudi used the opportunity given by MIDROC’s 13th Annual Sports Festival in the Mechare Arena, near the headquarters of MIDROC Ethiopia Technology Group in Addis Ababa, to speak out on the importance of sport as part of a healthy lifestyle as well as in building team spirit amongst MIDROC’s employees. "Health is something precious that you cannot buy in the market place but you can maintain it with exercise,” he said.

The 2016 sports festival earlier this year saw 551 employees, men and women from many different MIDROC companies, participate in events such as football, volleyball, lawn tennis, athletics, table tennis, chase and tug of war. Families were invited to come to the Festival to encourage youngsters to get involved in a healthy lifestyle.

Mohammed has also given support to African and Ethiopian national football, including women’s football, and his own favourite team the nationally iconic St. George’s, as well as contributing heavily to state of the art facilities such as the 25,000-seat Mohammed Al Amoudi Stadium which is nearing completion in Wollo (near where Mohammed himself first played football) and St. George’s Mekele Stadium.
